Mini-splits
Heat the rooms you use, without ductwork.
A mini-split pairs a wall-mounted indoor unit with a small outdoor unit, joined by a thin line set through the wall. It heats in winter and cools in summer, and it needs no ducts.
Good for
An addition, a finished attic or a sunroom
A floor that runs colder than the rest
A house with hot-water radiators and no ducts
A first step before replacing the boiler

At the visit and after
What happens at the visit.
- 01
Step 1: We look at the rooms
Where the cold rooms are, how the doors sit and where an indoor unit can go with a clear line to the outside wall.
- 02
Step 2: We calculate the load
Heat loss for each room, so the indoor unit and the outdoor unit are the right size together.
- 03
Step 3: You get it in writing
A quote that names the equipment, the number of indoor units, the electrical work and the rebate line.
- 04
Step 4: We install and test
Mount, run the line set, wire, start and check the charge. We show you the remote and the schedule settings.
What drives the cost
What decides the price.
No figures here, because two houses never need the same work. These are the lines on your quote.
Number of indoor units
One per zone, and some rooms share one.
Wall or ceiling units
Both exist; the room decides.
Line set length
A longer run from outdoor to indoor takes more time and material.
Electrical work
A dedicated circuit, and possibly more room in the panel.
Outdoor unit stand
A wall bracket or a raised stand, above the snow line.
Rebate and permit lines
Each is its own line, so you can see them.
Mini-split questions.
Do heat pumps work through a Maine winter?
Cold-climate models do. They are built to keep heating well below freezing, and Efficiency Maine says many perform down to -22 degrees F. What matters for your house is the equipment's published output at your coldest design temperature, so we size from that number and not from the model's name.
My house has no ducts. Can I still get one?
Yes. Ductless mini-splits heat rooms without any ductwork, and a multi-zone system can serve a whole house from one outdoor unit. The mini-splits page explains how we choose the number of indoor units.
Does snow bury the outdoor unit?
We mount outdoor units on a wall bracket or a raised stand, above where drifts and roof runoff land. Keep a path clear around it after a storm. A little steam or frost on the unit in winter is normal; it is the unit clearing its own coil.
What if the power goes out?
A heat pump needs power to run, and so does an oil or propane burner. If outages worry you, ask us about a generator or battery connection when we plan the electrical work.
